| NC DoT I-26 Connector Alternatives |
|
For each of the four alternatives in Segment B, a link is provided to an aerial image of the proposed roadways, created by NCDOT’s consultants. Each of these “zoomify” images can be zoomed and panned using the control icons in the lower left corner. Around the periphery of the image there are ground-level renderings that are keyed to locations along the project. Alternative 2: In this alternative the new I-26 Connector follows an alignment through the Westgate Shopping Center and Emma. I-240 traffic would continue to use the Smoky Park Bridges. I-240 traffic would continue to use the Smoky Park Bridges. I-240 traffic would follow the I-26 alignment to a point north of Westgate, where it would turn east, cross over the French Broad, and then follow the US 23/70 alignment southeast to rejoin the current I-240 alignment west of the Montford interchange. The Smoky Park Bridges would be used only for Patton Avenue traffic. This would allow the addition of pedestrian, bicycle, and transit facilities on the bridges. I-26 and I240 would both cross the French Broad north of Westgate. I-26 would then follow the US 23/70 alignment to the north, and I-240 would turn southeast as in Alt. 4. The Smoky Park Bridges would be used only for Patton Avenue traffic. This would allow the addition of pedestrian, bicycle, and transit facilities on the bridges.
